Amos 6:4-7 - Living in America?

You lie on beds adorned with ivory
     and lounge on your couches.
You dine on choice lambs
     and fattened calves.
You strum away on your harps like David
     and improvise on musical instruments.
You drink wine by the bowlful
     and use the finest lotions,
     but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;
     your feasting and lounging will end.

This passage describing Israel just really reminded me of us, living in America, living an easy, luxurious life.

Lord, thank you for your gifts which make our lives easier. Please help us to not be complacent in these gifts. Amen.

Proverbs 23:2 - Never saw this verse before

and put a knife to your throat
     if you are given to gluttony.

Honestly, I have never seen this verse before. Ok, well I guess I have, I went back and looked at my study in December of 2014 and Proverbs 23:1-3 was highlighted. My focus in that study was the idea that all the food these days is deceptive with chemically altered ingredients, which is true, but... Wow! verse 2 is a strong verse. I came across this when reading my sister's blog and it has stuck in my head for days. I have struggled with overeating my whole life. I'm having trouble coming up with motivation to eat healthy...I think I found it!

Lord, thank you for giving us healthy things to eat. Please help us to use food for the purposes you intend. Amen.
