Psalm 110:5 - God stands at the right hand of David

The Lord is at your right hand;
     he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.

I had trouble discerning Psalm 110, so I read this passage in the Message and it helped. I believe this psalm is stated in the words of God to David, letting him know he is the chosen ruler and God is at his right hand. I found that phase so interesting because just yesterday in Psalm 109:31 I highlighted how God stands at the right hand of the needy (in this case David was the needy one). So, God is with us, whether we are king or pauper, God stands at our right hand.

Lord, thank you for being at our right hand. Please help us to feel your strength and proceed forward with the confidence you give us. Amen.

Psalm 82:1 - A verse for TODAY!!

God presides in the great assembly;
     he renders judgment among the “gods”:

This is a very timely verse. I was a little confused by this psalm, so I checked on some commentaries to help me out. In the verse above "gods" refer to human rulers and judges. This verse reassures us that God is in control. Those in power answer to a higher power, a judge of judges. The rest of Psalm 82 gives instruction to those in power and reminds them of how little they know. Verse 5 states: “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken." Sounds like our current election situation...

Lord, Thank you for presiding over the "gods" of this earth. Please help our rulers and judges. Amen.

Psalm 72:1 - Pray for our leaders

Endow the king with your justice, O God,
     the royal son with your righteousness.

Psalm 72 is a prayer for David as King and the land he rules over. Such a perfect leader in a perfect land is described, this must be a prophecy about Jesus. This verse made me think about our current political situation with an upcoming presidential election, Regardless of the winner, God can use anyone. We must pray for our leaders to be just and righteous and for the safety and prosperity of our nation.

Lord, thank your for giving us a beautiful example of a perfect leader. Please help us to pray for our leaders and our land. Amen.

Psalm 58:7 - Wicked Rulers

Let them vanish like water that flows away;
     when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.

This Psalm focuses on wicked rulers. David acknowledges wicked rulers, but he knows they will vanish and be swept away. He asks God to foil their plans. They have no real power, so we have nothing to fear. Ultimately God is the only ruler who maters.

Lord, thank you for being our one true ruler. Please help us to trust in you, Amen.

Psalm 45:4 Jesus, the King

In your majesty ride forth victoriously
     in the cause of truth, humility and justice;
     let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.

Psalm 45 had me stumped.  It sounds like praise to a man, maybe King David, but David wrote the Psalms. I checked with an on-line commentary and got some insight. This is probably a prophetic message referring to the Jesus. When I reread it with that thought, it made much more sense. There is always something new for us to learn in the Bible!

Lord, thank you for your word and it's mysteries. Please help us to read and understand. Amen.

Psalm 2:10-11 - Kings and rulers

Therefore, you kings, be wise;
     be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear
    and celebrate his rule with trembling.

Psalm 2 is a warning for kings and rulers who do not serve the Lord. I love verse 4 which says, "The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them." This passage gives me comfort that no matter who is "in charge" here on earth, God is truly the one in charge.

Lord, thank you for giving us confidence in you. Help us to not be over concerned about the rulers here on earth because you are the only ruler who really matters. Amen.
