Psalm 3:5 - The Lord sustains me

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.

The third chapter in the Psalms mostly talks about deliverance from an enemy, but the verse above struck me because I am in a very busy month. When I am working full time (plus) and am busy with other projects, I get tired and grumpy. I know I have to pray my way through each day to keep up my energy and strength. No matter the struggle we are facing, God is always the one to turn to for sustenance.

Lord, thank you for giving us sleep and sustaining us. Please help us to rely on you at all times. Amen.

Exodus 18:17-18 - The work is too heavy

Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.

Are you the kind of person who tries to do everything on their own? Do you tackle huge projects without any help? Moses was trying to solve the disputes of the entire nation of Israel. His wise father-in-law was visiting and saw this was not working. Sometimes it takes someone on the outside to objectively look at a situation and see when it is not working and how it can be fixed. Why do we take on more than we can handle? It may just build up over time and we don't even realize how big it has become. It may be we are a "control freak" and think we are the only one who can do it "right." Whatever the reason, if we are wearing ourselves out it may be time to ask for help.

Lord, thank you for giving us opportunities to serve you and others. Please help us to recognize when the work is too heavy and ask for help. Amen.
